The ABCs of Colorectal Cancer

Objectives

To review the basics of colorectal cancer (CRC) and highlight possible oncology nursing roles in the assessment, education, and ongoing management of patients with metastatic CRC (mCRC) throughout the treatment continuum.

Data Sources

Research and clinical literature and practice guidelines.

Conclusion

Therapeutic advances made over the past decade necessitate more sophisticated medical and nursing care. Current evidence-based guidelines aid clinical decision-making, but flexibility and individualized treatment remain the optimal goal for every patient with CRC.

Implications for Nursing Practice

Because of these new clinical challenges, oncology nurses must be knowledgeable about therapy options as well as how to anticipate and manage treatment-related adverse effects.
