Objectives

To discuss the advantages of using intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), planning and delivery systems, clinical applications in specific cancers, considerations in the use of this technology, as well as implications for nursing practice.

Data Sources

Journal articles, journal reviews, and book chapters.

Conclusion

IMRT has revolutionized the treatment planning and delivery of external beam radiation therapy through techniques of inverse treatment planning, while delivering the most precise dose of radiation, and in some cases boosts the dose of radiation to identified involved structures while significantly limiting radiation doses to normal tissue(s) and critical structures.

Implications for Nursing Practice

IMRT has improved side-effect management of treatment sequelae for nurses, and gives the opportunity for positive reinforcement of patient education materials.
