Umbilical Cord Stem Cell Transplantation

Objectives

To discuss the history, current state, and future directions of umbilical cord blood (UCB) transplantation as it relates to the emerging field of cellular therapies.

Data Sources

Research studies, articles, and personal experiences.

Conclusion

Transplantation using hematopoietic stem cells from UCB is a life-saving option for patients with select oncologic and immunologic diseases, bone marrow failure, hemoglobinopathies, and inborn errors of metabolism.
